Following Jon
Favreau's The Jungle Book tremendous success, Disney is looking to extend their
already packed slate of live-action features based on classic animated movies
with The Little Mermaid.
It seems studio
executives were recently pitched an idea for a new movie based on Hans
Christian Anderson's old tale and loved it so much that discussions have
already taken place with several producers, some of which with strong
connections to Disney.
For Disney, the 1989
animated version of The Little Mermaid holds special significance as it opened
the doors to a new golden age of animation at the studio, which they followed
with Beauty and the Beast in '91 and Aladdin in '92. The project was nominated
for multiple awards, winning several, including Best Original Song for Under
the Sea, and Best Original Score.
But Disney isn't the
only studio pursuing a live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Universal
Pictures is also working on one with up-and-coming filmmaker Rebecca Thomas ("Electrick
Children") directing from a script by Richard Curtis ("Love Actually"),
and Chloe Grace Moretz starring in the lead role.
Disney's slate of
movies based on their classic properties includes:
Alice Through the
Looking Glass (May 27);
Pete's Dragon (August
12);
Beauty and the Beast
(March 17, 2017);
Cruella with Emma
Stone starring;
Dumbo with Tim Burton
directing;
Mary Poppins sequel
with Rob Marshall directing Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda;
Maleficent 2;
The Nutcracker and
the Four Realms with Lasse Hallstrom directing;
The Jungle Book 2
with director Jon Favreau and writer Justin Marks returning;
Tinker Bell with
Reese Witherspoon starring;
Other projects in the
pipeline includes a sci-fi fantasy film titled A Wrinkle In Time with Ava
DuVernay directing, and Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson starring.
