Riding on the momentum of Marvel's Captain
America: Civil War, directors Anthony and Joe Russo have picked up the rights
to an interesting new project, which they plan to develop for television.
The filmmaker's Gateway Productions
has teamed-up with Skybound Entertainment to acquire the rights to The
Mastermind, a series of investigative articles written by Atavist founder Evan
Ratliff for the Atavist Magazine.
Said to be similar in format to the
popular Making a Murder on Netflix, The Mastermind follows the criminal exploits
of a brilliant programmer and a vicious cartel boss turned prized government
asset, Paul Le Roux.
"Evan is breaking the story of
one of the most successful and notorious global criminal masterminds of the
21st century – covering his rise to power, getting busted by the
DEA and then turning state’s witness as they piece together and dismantle his
vast, disconnected global criminal empire," said Getaway's President of
Film and Television Mike Larocca. "We were riveted by this true crime
story, its societal implications and cinematic potential."
Skybound Entertainment’s Co-President
of Film and Television Sean Furst adds, "we have had some experience
and, happily, some success in creating fictional, serialized dramas but the
opportunity to base a show on real world current events with such a fascinating
if nefarious main character was certainly compelling to us."
