Deadwood star Ian
McShane has landed a key role in the upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American
Gods on Starz's.
The actor, who is
also known for his roles on The Pillars of the Earth, John Wick, and Ray
Donovan, is set to play Mr. Wednesday, a powerful and charismatic con-man who
just so happens to be the incarnation of the All-Father Odin. In the story, the
character is travelling across America recruiting other forgotten gods to wage
war against the new American Gods.
"When you write a beloved character (beloved
with, or despite, or because of all his faults) like Mr. Wednesday, you get to
watch the Internet trying to cast the role. I've seen a hundred names
suggested, but few make me grin like Ian McShane does. I've already been lucky
enough to have him in one film (he was bright blue in it, animated, and
probably Polish). Now I count myself even luckier: He's made the journey from Lovejoy to American Gods. Yesterday was Super Tuesday. Today is
Wonderful Wednesday," Gaimain said in a statement.
In American Gods, a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional
gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world
steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods
reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media,
celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow
Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling
partner to Mr. Wednesday, a
conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to
gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
McShane joins Ricky
Whittle (The 100) as the ex-con turned bodyguard, Shadow Moon.
Hannibal creator
Bryan Fuller and Smallville producer Michael Green will write and serve as
showrunners with David Slade (Hannibal) directing the pilot as well as future
episodes.
