Australian actress Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) has joined the cast
of the small screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman's fantasy novel, American Gods
where she will play Laura Moon, the wife of the story lead protagonist Shadow
Moon played by The 100's Ricky Whittle.
American Gods centers on a war brewing between old and new gods: the
traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the
world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon
of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology,
media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow
Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling
partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the
older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation
to battle the new deities.
In the novel (spoilers), Laura Moon dies very early on
from a car accident just days before Shadow's release from prison. For the
upcoming series however it seems that that character was rewritten to be alive
and well as according to The Hollywood Reporter, Laura "will go on an unexpected
journey that leads her to an epiphany about her relationship and affords her a
second chance to get things right."
Also starring in American Gods is John Wick and Ray
Donovan actor Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday.
Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller and Smallville producer Michael Green will
write and serve as showrunners for the Starz series with David Slade (Hannibal) directing the pilot
as well as future episodes.
