English filmmaker Danny Boyle
has entered negotiations to direct the feature film adaptation of Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, and Richard Maltby Jr.
acclaimed stage musical Miss Saigon.
An
adaptation itself of Giacomo Puccini's 1903 opera Madame Butterfly, which
follows the doomed romance between an American lieutenant and a geisha, Miss
Saigon "updates" the story and centers on the relationship between an
American CI and Vietnamese bargirl during the Vietnam War.
The
play won several awards including Laurence Olivier and Tony for Jonathan Pryce
and Lea Salonga.
Les
Miserables producer Cameron Mackintosh and Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric
Fellner are reportedly onboard to produce, though there has been no
confirmation.
Before
Boyle tackles the musical he will has the long awaited sequel to Trainspotting
to take care off. According to a recent Facebook post, Boyle has is already in
Edinburg filming the sequel.
"We're up in
Scotland filming Trainspotting 2 just now. I think what I love most about what
I do is the variety, and being able to do something new every day. I get to
meet such amazing people all the time. I think everyone's fear is doing
something a robot can do, and getting stuck doing something repetitive. I feel
very fortunate and grateful to be able to make films, and to be able to always
have a choice in what I do. Coming back to Edinburgh has actually been really
fascinating, since filming the first Trainspotting Edinburgh has changed
dramatically. You can see the gentrification massively in the city."
Based
on author Irvine Welsh's own literary sequel to Trainspotting titled Porno, the
film will open in theaters sometime in 2017.
