While far from being a confirmation, it sounds like
Deadpool's grand opening this past weekend may have changed some minds over at 20th
Century Fox, the studio that so famously took their time deciding whether the
project was a "risk" worth making. It definitely was and we are all much
happier because of it.
With Deadpool closing in on $300 million worldwide,
Fox is probably rethinking their business strategy and looking at their stable
of Marvel characters to see if any of them is R-rated material, and though I don't
think Fox will start to toss out rated-R superhero movies indiscriminately, it
seems some kind of talk has already taken place.
Speaking to Collider, Simon Kinberg, who is Fox's superhero
universe mastermind akin to Zack Snyder over at Warner Bros., revealed that he believes
the studio has some R-rated properties worth being explored in the future.
"I think there are some stories that could be R-rated.
I don’t know what they are, I mean I think the mainline X-Men movies have their
own tone, which is a more operatic tone. It’s more dramatic, it is more PG-13
in a way. X-Force I could see being R-rated, and
who knows?"
Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld was sitting next to
Kinberg and he was quick to point out that the his comments could be misconstrued
and become fact so the producer clarified the statement saying that he could
conceive of a universe where an X-Force movie is R-rated.
If you have been paying attention to Ryan Reynolds,
you know that Kinberg's mention of X-Force does not come out of nowhere. The
Deadpool star recently said that getting the X-Force to the big screen is his
next objective. The X-Force is similar to the X-Men except more violent, and
its members include Deadpool, and Cable, who was mentioned in the Deadpool
movie after-credits and should make his debut in the upcoming sequel.
A few years ago Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow announced
he was working on a X-Force movie for Fox, but that project fell through.
