After years of false starts and multiple plans, the big screen adaptation
of Stephen King's The Dark Tower if finally getting off the ground with BAFTA and
Oscar nominee Nikolaj Arcel (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, A Royal Affair)
directing and Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, and now Mad Max: Fury Road's
Abbey Lee possibly starring.
According to a variety of sources, the Mad Max actress has entered
negotiations with Sony Pictures and MRC (Media Rights Capital) to play Tirana
in The Dark Tower.
I haven't read The Dark Tower (sorry!) but as far as I'm aware Tirana is a
minor character that doesn’t appear until the seventh volume in King's story,
however there is going to be some retrofitting for her to appear in the first
movie. Deadline adds that Tirana will be a major character in the movie and
describes her as "sexy [Lee is a model after all] and dangerous" with fake human skin and "cold snake-like eyes."
As far as I know, Elba is still the frontrunner to play the lead Roland
Deschain, while McConaughey was offered the villainous Man in Black role, but
neither of them has signed on as far as I know. Of course, it is entirely possible
they might have but Sony is holding on to the announcement until they have all
the eggs in one basket.
The original plan for The Dark Tower was to build a movie franchise with a
complementary TV series in between installments in order to tell the full story,
though it is unclear if that is still the plan.
The movie is based off The Gunslinger, the first book in King's series,
which establishes the relationship between Deschain and his young protégé Jake
Chambers.
