Release Date Shuffle - Rings Pushed Back; Linklater's Latest Moves Forward & Monsters Run From Spielberg

Today has been a busy day for Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures. Both studios have announced some changes in their release schedule for 2016 and 2018, which includes the horror movie Rings, the comedy/drama Everybody Wants Some, and a yet untitled monster movie.

First, Universal has decided they did not want their yet untitled entry in the classic movie monsters franchise they are putting together to compete with Ready Player One, the upcoming sci-fi movie Steven Spielberg is directing for Warner Bros., and that is schedule to open in theaters on March 30, 2018. The monster movie will now open on April 13, 2018. So far in the same month there is an untitled Laika movie, and an also untitled New Line tentpole.

Spielberg's Ready Player One was also a victim of rescheduling not too long when Lucasfilm decided to move Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII for the same day.

Moving on to Paramount, the studio has just announced that Richard Linklater's '80s college baseball comedy and spiritual to Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some, is moving up the release schedule and will now have a limited release on April 1st before going wide on April 8. The movie was originally set for a wide release on April 15. The April 1st date puts Everybody Wants Some in direct "competition" with Amityville: The Awakening (horror), Collider (action), The Dark Horse (drama), God's Not Dead 2 (drama), Miles Ahead (drama), and Standing Tall (Int. drama). Meanwhile, the April 8 date sees the comedy going up against Before I Wake (horror), The Boss (comedy), Demolition (drama), Hardcore Henry (action thriller), The Invitation (horror thriller), Louder than Bombs (drama), and Wedding Doll (drama).

As for Rings, Paramount's other project, it also shifted dates. The sequel to The Ring will now open in theaters on October 28 and not April 1. The new release date is more troublesome than the ones for the previous two movies. Rings will now open against Ron Howard's Inferno (thriller), and an untitled horror project from Lionsgate. And as if those two project weren't enough the sequel to Ouija comes out the week prior.
