Hollywood woke up to Stephen King in the mid '70s and hasn't
let go since. The prolific writer has seen his work adapted more times he even realizes.
Back in the early '90s, ABC aired a two-episode miniseries of It, King's successful
attempt at making kids everywhere run for their lives at the sight of a clown.
A few years ago True Detective director Cary Fukunaga
tried to develop a new take on the property, which he was going to write and
direct, unfortunately he departed from the project over creative differences.
Now Mama director Andy Muschietti is onboard to direct the long waited new
adaptation with an eye to begin filming later this year.
Speaking to Collider at DICE 2016, producer Roy Lee confirmed
that production is expected to begin later this year, and revealed that the
original script written by Fukunaga and Chase Palmer has been rewritten.
"It will
hopefully be shooting later this year. We just got the California tax credit…
Gary Doberman wrote the most recent draft working with Andy Muscetti, so it’s being
envisioned as two movies."
The original has always been to make two movies, the first would follow the
characters as children, while the second would follow them as adults.
"It is very
close to the source material in one way but very different if you look at it as
a literary piece of work… We’re taking it and making the movie from the point
of view of the kids, and then making another movie from the point of view of
the adults, that could potentially then be cut together like the novel. But
it’s gonna be a really fun way of making this movie."
As for the rating, Lee confirms it will be R, and adds that they are still
fine-tuning it for budget purposes.
"We are very
close to turning in the final draft of the script. It’s mainly working on it
for budgeting purposes to make it fit within the budget that we have."
Will Poulter (The
Revenant) was initially set to play the villainous Pennywise when Fukunaga was
attached to direct but he has since left the project.
