It seems
the Force is stronger in December than in May.
Today,
Lucasfilm announced the change of release dates for writer/director Rian
Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII, citing the "unexpected" success of
The Force Awakens as the reason for the change. The second installment in
the new Skywalker trilogy will now open on December 15, 2017, and not on May 26
like originally planned.
Episode
VIII follows the footsteps of J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and
Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and becomes third Star Wars movie
to open in December.
Johnson's
Star Wars sequel is currently in pre-production in London, where production is
expected to begin next month with Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver,
Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Benicio del Toro, Andy Serkis, Domhnall
Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o, Gwendoline Christie, Anthony Daniels, and Peter
Mayhew.
