It seems Johnny Depp
isn't done with crime dramas just yet.
After receiving much
praise for his work as Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, Johnny
Depp is in early talks to star in the long gestating South American crime
thriller, Triple Frontier.
Triple Frontier
refers to a notorious border zone shared by Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil,
which is difficult to monitor and is considered a haven for organized crime.
This isn't the first
time Depp has come into contact with Triple Frontier. Back when Kathryn Bigelow
(The Hurt Locker) was attached to direct, she and the actor talked about finding a role in the movie for him to play, but after the studio insisted she cast
Will Smith in return for the $80 million necessary for the movie, she quit.
The great J.C.
Chandor (Margin Call, All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year) is now sitting in the
director's chair, and negotiations with Depp resumed. There is also an offer
out to Tom Hanks, and Will Smith has passed on the project.
Chandor will be
working off a script penned by Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty).
Depp, who recently
wrapped Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales for Disney, has a
couple of movies coming out this year. Alice Through the Looking Glass comes
out May 27, and Kevin Smith's indie Yoga Hosers premieres in just a few days at
the Sundance Film Festival.
