Sony
Pictures has finally found a director to helm their Jumanji reboot, which they
have scheduled for a December 25 release.
Jake
Kasdan (son of Star Wars' Lawrence Kasdan) will be directing from a script by Scott
Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, which in turn is based on a draft by original
writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommoers, which in turn again is based on the
Caldecott Medal-winning adventure book by Chris Van Allsburg, who will produce
the project alongside Matt Tolmach.
In
the original 1995 movie starring Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, and a young
Kristen Dunst, a magical board
game unleashes a world of adventure on siblings Peter (Bradley Pierce) and Judy
Shepherd (Dunst). While exploring an old mansion, the youngsters find a
curious, jungle-themed game called Jumanji in the attic. When they start
playing, they free Alan Parrish (Williams), who’s been stuck in the game’s inner world for decades.
If they win Jumanji, the kids can free Alan for good, but that means braving
giant bugs, ill-mannered monkeys and even stampeding rhinos!
Kasdan's
credits include Freaks and Geeks, New Girl, and The Grinder on TV, and Walk
Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Bad Teacher, and Sex Tape.
