Veteran stage, TV,
and film actor Alan Rickman has died at age 69 from cancer. His death was
confirmed by his family.
"The actor and
director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded
by family and friends," a family statement reads.
Rickman was one of
Great Britain's greatest actors thanks partially to his memorable performances in
such movies as the Harry Potter franchise, Die Hard, Robin Hood: Prince of
Thieves, Sense and Sensibility, Michael Collins, Dogma, Galaxy Quest, Love
Actually, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Sweeney Todd, Alice in
Wonderland, and Lee Daniels' The Butler.
The actor won a
Golden Globe and Emmy for playing Rasputin in a movie of the same name, and a best
supporting actor Golden Globe for playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin
Hood: Prince of Thieves.
He recently wrapped
up his voice performance in Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Rickman also directed
a couple of movies. The 1997 drama The Winter Guest starring Emma Thompson and
Phyllida Law, and A Little Chaos in 2014 starring Kate Winslet and Matthias
Schoenaerts.
