Amidst yet another
heated debate about the lack of diversity in the makeup of the Academy and
Oscar nominations, the institution president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, released an
official statement promising a dramatic change in the composition of their
membership in the foreseeable future.

While it is good to
hear that there will be an effort by the Academy to include more non-white-old-men
in their composition, it doesn't erase the fact that they have done very little
to make any significant headway in diversifying their membership with people of
different ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.
The Academy definitely
deserves some of the blame for the lack of diversity in the different voting
branches, but the main problem culprits are the studios who don't support or
just don't develop as many movies about "minorities" and women as
they do about white men.
For the time being
several actors, directors, and producers, including Spike Lee, and Jada
Pinkett-Smith have shared their discontent with the situation and have
announced that they will not attend the ceremony as a form of protest.
On my part I don't
see how Tangerine, Straight Outta Compton, and Creed didn't get any nominations
in the Best Actor category, and even in the Best Picture department.
