Alejandro
González Iñárritu's The Revenant and Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight have
leaked online sooner than expected. It seems that several pirate sites got
their hands on the Oscar screeners sent to voters for awards consideration.
According
to Variety, over 739, 580 unique IP addresses have illegally downloaded The Revenant
in the last 24 hours, while The Hateful Eight has been plundered over 569,153 times.
Of
course these aren't the only Oscar contenders that have been leaked. Carol,
Room, Steve Jobs, Joy, Creed, Sicario, Brooklyn, and The Good Dinosaur have all
landed online, as did many, many, many others.
While
I expect Iñárritu to be everything but happy, seeing his movie end up online must
be especially hard for Quentin Tarantino, who faced an identical problem last
year when the script for The Hateful Eight leaked.
Without
trying to shift the blame away from the pirate groups, I'm still amazed that some
studios and networks still send DVDs and Blu-rays, when online screeners, while
not perfect, are the safest way to get their product in the hands of awards
voters, and critics.
For
instance, HBO recently changed their screener policy from hardcopy to online,
when a DVD screener containing the fifth season premiere of Game of Thrones
leaked.
Fox,
the Weinstein Co., and Warner Bros. have yet to issue a statement regarding the
theft and distribution of their films.
The
Revenant and The Hateful Eight premiere on December 25.
