It looks like Universal Pictures has found someone to replace Sofia Coppola
in the director's chair of the upcoming live-action take on The Little Mermaid.
According to The Wrap, up and coming writer-director Rebecca Thomas has
entered negotiations with the studio after having a meeting with lead star Chloƫ Grace Moretz, who worked with Rory Culkin on Hick, who in turn starred in
Thomas' debut feature, Electrick Children,. Just little bit of trivia.
Love Actually scribe Richard Curtis is writing the script for The Little
Mermaid, which has passed through several hands in the years that it has been
in development. Joe Wright was initially going to direct the movie, but decided
to trade the story about the underwater princess for one about a flying boy, Pan.
Coppola then came in, but she too left, citing creative and casting differences.
Thomas is also attached to direct the upcoming Looking for Alaska, the third
adaptation of a novel by John Green following The Fault in Our Stars and Paper
Towns.
It's unclear what project Thomas will execute first since neither project
has been greenlit yet.
