Empire has unveiled an exclusive picture from Jon
Favreau's The Jungle Book featuring Mowgli, played by Neel Sethi and Raksha,
Mowgli's wolf mother voiced by Lupita Nyong'o in her second CGI role after Maz
Kanata in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
With Mowgli being the lead character in the movie, finding a
young boy who could carry an entire movie on his own (since he is mostly acting
opposite CGI animals) was imperative, and after seeing over 2,000 other
candidates for the role, Favreau and the casting director placed their hopes on
young Sethi, whose only other credit is the 2013 short, Diwali.
"There was a certain quality we wanted, and we
knew he was going to have to carry the film," Favreau told Empire about casting Sethi for the role. "So it
was going to have to be somebody that had a certain charisma, a certain charm
and certain qualities that I remember from the cartoon."
Opening on April 15, 2016, The Jungle
Book also stars Giancarlo Esposito as Akela, Mowgli's wolf father, Bill Murray as Baloo, Idris
Elba as Shere Khan, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, Ben Kingsley as
Bagheera, and Christopher Walken as King Louie.
