After some
speculation, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and executive producer
Stephen Broussard have confirmed with Entertainment Weekly that Danish actor Mads
Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Casino Royal) is indeed playing the main villain in Scott
Derrickson's upcoming Doctor Strange.
"Mads is playing
our main villain" Broussard said before pointing out that so far no one has guessed and published the name of Mikkelsen's character.
Meanwhile, Feige is a
little bit more open and reveals that Mikkelsen's character is "a sorcerer
who breaks off into his own sect," and "believes that the Ancient One
is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if
we were to allow some of these other things through."
If Broussard and
Feige's words are to be believed and they are not just trying to bury the most
obvious character under a pile of misdirection, then Dormammu is off the table
as a possible contender since his name has come up many times in the past, however,
and this is just a brief speculation, but how about Kaluu or Mister Jip.
Kaluu grew up with
The Ancient One, and while The Ancient One believes they should use their
powers to benefit humankind, Kaluu thinks the power they have attained should
be use to rule over others. Mister Jip on the other hand, is an evil ancient
wizard, and The Ancient One's first student.
But, the Marvel
Cinematic Universe isn't known for sticking to the comic book pages, so it's
difficult to figure out who Mikkelsen could be playing, and yet, both
characters could provide an additional dramatic charge to the story.
Marvel's Doctor Strange
opens on November 4, 2016 and also stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular
Doctor Strange, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Rachel
McAdams as Night Nurse, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Michael Stuhlbarg as
Nicodemus West, and Amy Landecker.
