Emmy and three-time Golden Globe nominee Sonia Braga (Kiss
of the Spider Woman, Moon Over Parador) has joined Netflix's third Marvel
series, Luke Cage. The Brazilian actress will play Soledad Temple, Claire's (Rosario
Dawson) mother.
"A character as strong as Claire needs an equally
powerful mother, and with Sonia we found the perfect actress to deliver the
stellar performance we needed," said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel
Television, Jeph Loeb. "In Marvel’s Luke Cage, fans
will now get a chance to see where Claire got the fire we love her for."
Braga's rise to fame started when she starred in the
Brazilian soap opera Gabriela. Ten years later in 1985 she was cast as the
titular Spider Woman (no comic book relation) opposite Raul Julia and William
Hurt in Hector Babenco's Kiss of the Spider Woman, which gave Hurt a Best Actor
Oscar Award, and Braga her first Golden Globe nomination. After that she has
appeared in countless other movies including Moon Over Parador and The Burning
Season, for which she received two other Golden Globes and Emmy nominations. She
also appeared in such shows as Alias, Royal Pains, Warehouse 13, and Bothers &
Sisters.
"Sonia Braga? Rosario Dawson? ‘Nuff said. I'm tuning in," said
Executive Producer and Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. "When it came to
finding someone who was both formidable yet possessed a light touch, Sonia was
the perfect choice and has been a Godsend."
Braga joins Mike Colter as the
titular Luke Cage, Simone Missick as Misty
Knight, Theo Rossi as Shades, Frank Whaley as Det. Rafael Scarfe, and of
course Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple.
