With The Martian a hit in theaters and probably
being prepped by the studio for an Oscar campaign, Ridley Scott turns his
attention to the upcoming Prometheus sequel. A couple of months ago, while
promoting The Martian, Scott revealed that he had titled the sequel Alien:
Paradise Lost, in reference to John Milton's poem. Now it seems that something
has changed because amidst a discussion about his career at the AFI Film
Festival, Scott casually revealed that the title has changed and will now be
called Alien: Covenant.
"I
was going to be doing what will be called ‘Alien: Covenant,’ which starts
shooting next February, and we were struggling then with the screenplay there
and then there was a phone call, somebody saying, ‘Listen, we’ve got this thing
which is completely written called ‘Martian,’ and I said, ‘Huh.’ And I sped
read it in an hour and by mid-afternoon, I talked to Fox and said, ‘I need to
talk to ‘Drew [Goddard]…’"
Alien:
Covenant is scheduled to premiere on May 30, 2017, with more sequels to come. Maybe
one of them will be titled Alien:
Paradise Lost.
