Danish actor Pilou Asbæk has joined
DreamWorks' adaptation of Masamune Shirow's acclaimed sci-fi manga, Ghost in
the Shell. The actor will play Batou, Major Motoko Kusanagi's (Scarlett
Johansson) second-in-command and best fighter in Section 9's strike force.
In the source
material, Section 9 is special ops team
from the Japanese Ministry of Home Affairs led by Chief Daisuke
Aramaki, who tasks Major Kusanagi and her team (Batou, Togusa, Ishikawa, Saito,
Paz, Borma, and Azuma) with the investigation of a series of crimes perpetrated
by the Puppeteer, who hacks humans with cyberbrains and makes them do his
bidding.
For the movie
however, Section 9 works for Hanka Robotics, and "is devoted to stopping
the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man whose
singular goal is to wipe out Hanka’s advancements in cyber technology."
Asbæk and Johansson are no strangers. They previously
worked together on Luc Besson's Lucy. The actor will next be seen as Euron
Greyjoy on Game of Thrones, and as Pontious Pilate in Ben-Hur.
Rupert
Sanders is directing Ghost in the Shell, which is expected to go into
production early next year in New Zealand for a March 31, 2017 release.
