While
shy of the box-office success of its predecessor, Christopher McQuarrie's Mission:
Impossible - Rogue Nation did turn in both a good profit and critical acclaim
to Paramount and Skydance, which is why they are keen in continuing to work
with the writer/director.
According
to Variety, McQuarrie will write and possibly direct the next entry in the
Mission: Impossible franchise, and while both studios have declined to comment,
sources close to the project say that talks have already started, with one in particular
saying that the studio plan is to begin production as early as next August.
It
is worth pointing out that the franchise never held to a director, so McQuarrie's
return would be first.
Brian
De Palma directed the first movie. The second one was directed by John Woo, the
third by J.J. Abrams, and the fourth by Brad Bird.
Tom
Cruise is expected to return obviously, as is Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust.
