Chloe Grace Moretz
has signed on to play the lead character in the upcoming retelling or
straight-up adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's story, The Little Mermaid.
Working Title and
universal Pictures had been after the actress for quite some time, in fact,
Moretz had been the frontrunner for the role even while Sofia Coppola was
attached to direct, and some say that Coppola's reluctance in casting Moretz was
the trigger for her exit, which was cited as creative differences.
Four Weddings and a
Funeral, and Love Actually writer/director Richard Curtis is in talks to adapt Anderson's
1837 fairy tale, which widely diverges from the Disney movie (obviously) in both
tone and ending.
