We
recently reported that star and producer, Channing Tatum was courting Edge of
Tomorrow director Doug Liman to replace Rupert Wyatt on 20th Century Fox's upcoming
X-Men spinoff, Gambit. Now a couple of new names have joined the list of
possible contenders for the job, and they are Joe Cornish and Shane Black.
Having
directed the third highest grossing Marvel picture to date, Iron Man 3, which
grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide, Shane Black could be the safest bet for
Fox, even more so than Liman, however, Black is currently in post-production on
his next movie, The Nice Guys, and is also attached to direct the Predator
reboot for the studio.
As
for Cornish, he wrote and directed the stupendous Attack the Block, which bombed
at the box office, but became a cult classic and helped catapult the American
career of Star Wars: The Force Awakens star, John Boyega. But there could be a
problem. The recent problems between the studio and Josh Trank over Fantastic
Four, plus the writer/director own history with superhero adaptations (he
co-wrote Ant-Man with Edgar Wright) could be a deterrent for Cornish.
Gambit
is still set to hit theaters on October 7, 2016, so a decision should be made
public rather shortly.
