Had Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
been a success and we wouldn't be having a discussion regarding the future of
the franchise and character, but since it wasn't, and Shia LaBeouf's Mutt
Williams didn't really swing the way everyone expected, here we are.
Speaking to Total Film, franchise producer, Frank
Marshall offered some closure to a rumor that started a year or so ago, in
which actors Bradley Cooper and Chris Pratt were rumored to be on the studio
radar to replace Harrison Ford in the next Indiana Jones installment.
"There are a lot of rumors. We haven’t even sat
down to talk about Indy yet… at some point we’ll sit down. But there’s a bunch
of people who could probably take the baton. [But we are] not doing the Bond
thing where we’re going to call somebody else Indiana Jones… we have to figure
this out."
It's easy to understand why Marshall is opposed to recasting
the character. Harrison Ford is iconic to the franchise, hell he is the
franchise, but when said franchise is titled after the main character that is
played by someone you don't want to replace, then you are left with very few
options.
Since recasting is (for now) out of the table then so
is a prequel. A spinoff could work if it's not called Indiana Jones, because
following the adventures of Frank in Indiana Jones 5 or 6 would be a cynical attempt at prolonging the
franchise.
For the time being they will probably continue with
Ford, but at 73 years-old, I suspect that his days has Indy are coming to an
end.
