It is rare for studios to give one director the opportunity
to work on a franchise from beginning to end. Usually someone comes in, helps set
the tone and visual style, and is replaced in the follow-up(s) (The Hunger
Games, Harry Potter, X-Men), so I'm glad that 20th Century Fox is sticking with
Wes Ball for the entirety of the Maze Runner franchise, which is merely one
movie away from ending.
While at the red carpet premiere of the Maze Runner:
The Scorch Trials in New York City, Ball revealed to Variety that the plan is
"to create an awesome three-movie trilogy," adding, "not many
people have done that and now I have the opportunity to do that. I am directing
the third film and we’ve already been busy preparing and working on the final
conclusion of this saga."
The director also spoke of how they are using the
second installment to help set up the third and final movie in the franchise
based on James Dashner's series of YA novels.
"We are setting
up a lot of things that aren’t necessarily apparent in the second movie, but it
will pay off big time in the third movie," he said. "So that has
been my approach and I’m glad that I can finish the series. I’m lucky and
thankful that they asked me to direct all three films. At first I wasn’t sure
if I was going to do it or not, but honestly, it was the cast that I wanted to
work with again. They are such great people."
As a director Ball "owes"
a lot to the franchise since his first feature film was also the franchise's first installment,
so it's understandable that he would want to see it through to its conclusion.
Maze Runner: The
Scorch Trials opens this Friday, September 18, while Maze Runner: The Death Cure is scheduled to hit
theaters on February 17, 2017.
