Unlike most major studios, Universal Pictures will
make use of their portfolio of iconic movie monsters such as the Mummy, Wolfman,
and Frankenstein to build their shared cinematic universe. In charge of
bringing the plan to fruition are Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious) and Alex
Kurtzman (Star Trek Into Darkness, The Amazing Spider-Man 2), who will also
direct what we previously believed to be the second step into said cinematic
universe, The Mummy.
Speaking to /Film, Kurtzman said that despite his lack
of experience behind the camera, everyone over at Universal have been
incredibly supportive, and revealed that though other monsters may appear in
his film, the Luke Evans' Dracula from the 2014 movie Dracula Untold won't,
despite ongoing conversations.
The plan to connect Dracula Untold to Universal's
monster universe was initially brought-up by the film's executive producer
Alissa Philips, who at the Dracula Untold premiere revealed that the movie was
"part of the monster revamp".
Dracula Untold made a hefty profit at the worldwide
box office where it managed to gross over $200 million on a $70 million budget,
however since it was panned by critics and not particularly loved by fans,
chances are that Universal is rethinking the would-be franchise and whether to
include it in the Monsterverse or not.
As for his take on the classic movie monster, Kurtzman
will introduce a more traditional looking mummy, bandages and all, in a modern
setting, where according to the writer/director the "rules change".
What those rules are he didn't say, but part of the difficulty/excitement for
Kurtzman was in how make audiences believe that a "living" mummy
could exist in a modern day.
Kurtzman's The Mummy is scheduled to be released on
March 24, 2017.
