It's not unusual for smaller
projects to test the waters with a limited release before going wide, but
having three distinct release dates for a single film seems like overkill. Universal
Pictures has announced that they have changed the release strategy for Danny
Boyle's Steve Jobs biopic, which now will open on three separate occasions in
the US.
Written by Aaron
Sorkin and starring Michael Fassbender, the biopic will first open in New York
and Los Angeles on October 9, before expanding to others parts of the US on
October 16, followed by a wide release on October 23. The strategy is quite
different from the one originally announced, which had the film opening wide on
October 9.
I can understand Universal being threatened by Ridley
Scott's The Martian, which has been getting extremely positive reviews and will
open a week before, but three different release dates seem a little excessive,
especially considering the subject matter and amount of very well known talent
behind and in front of the camera.
Steve Jobs also stars Kate
Winslet, Seth Rogen, Jeff Daniels, Katherine Waterston, Adam Shapiro, John
Ortiz, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
