While I initially found
the concept of a crossover between Men in Black and 21 Jump Street to be a cynical
cash-grab by the studio that reeked of desperation to build a shared cinematic universe, the idea actually grew on me, and I found myself
thinking of ways in which Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones would interact with Jonah
Hill and Channing Tatum.
Well, it looks like
Sony has a new plan of attack for the Smith and Jones fronted franchise, and it
involves neither of them.
The Hollywood
Reporter recently caught up with the three time Oscar winning producers Walter
Parkes and Laurie MacDonald at TIFF and asked them about the status of Men in
Black, to which they responded that they and Sony are in the "middle of it",
and that the project is "very active".
As for Will Smith's
return, Parkes doesn't believe he will, while MacDonald reveals that the
franchise will be "reinvented as a trilogy", and as such both leading
characters will probably be recast.
