Last month at Disney's D23 Expo, Lucasfilm announced
the official cast for Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and among
the many names revealed was Hannibal and Valhalla Rising star, Mads Mikkelsen.
Since the announcement, there has been a lot of
speculation in the fan community over whom the actor is playing the film, until
maybe now. While at FanExpo, Mikkelsen signed a Hannibal poster and beneath his
signature, he wrote Galen. Though just a name for some, it should ring some
bells to fans. Could Mikkelsen be playing Galen Marek?
In The Force Unleash video game, novels, and comics,
Galen Marek is the son of two exiled Jedi Knights, Mallie, who died while
fighting a group of slavers, and Kento Marek, who died afterwards at the hands
of Darth Vader, who spares the young boy's life after sensing an exceptionally
strong connection with the Force coming from him. Because of the Sith's rule of
two (one master and one apprentice), Vader secretly takes in Galen to train him
as his apprentice. After turning to the dark side, Galen becomes Starkiller.
Having Starkiller finally making his big screen debut
is something that some fans have been hoping for, however, there are a couple
of problems with this theory. First, both the game and movie happen at around
the same time (give or take a couple of years), making Mikkelsen too old to
play a character in his 20. Moreover, having an overpowered character like
Starkiller (he once pulled a Star Destroyer from orbit and crashed it) goes against
what little we know of Rogue One, which is that it won't focus on Jedi and Sith.
