The live action
adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira has been almost-here for nearly fifteen
years. Ever since Warner Bros. first acquired the rights to the iconic manga
back in 2002, the project has been passed from hand to hand without ever going anywhere.
Of the many that have
tried, Unknown and Non-Stop director Jaume Collet-Serra proved to be the most successful
of them all, and even then he only managed to pass the development stage and go
into pre-production before being shut down. Serra eventually returned to try to
inject some new live into the project, but nothing came out of it, and he left.
Since Serra's departure,
Warner Bros. has taken some steps to bring Otomo's six-volume story to the big
screen. Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way is now handling the
project, Sons of Anarchy writer Marco J. Ramirez is penning the new script, and
according to Den of Geek the new plan is to make a trilogy of films. The
reasoning behind the sudden change in plan is unclear, but I wonder if it has
anything to do with budget, which has always been one of Warner Bros. main concerns.
But it doesn't stop
here. The site also claims that a source close to the project has told them
that Christopher Nolan has contacted someone who was at one time attach to direct
to talk about Akira, and though they cannot name names, I would not be
surprised if the nameless director was Serra.
Last week we got to
some insight into Nolan's upcoming schedule, when a report came out announcing
that he had a mystery film due out on July 2017. Could it be Akira? It could. Nolan
has a good relationship with both Warner and DiCaprio. The subject matter seems
to be right up his alley, and Akira is the type of movie you would open in
July. On the other hand I wonder if Nolan wants to do another trilogy based on
someone else's work.
