No, despite the similarities Warner Bros. did not acquire the rights to adapt the video game of the
same name. They did however, nabbed Dwaine Worrell's (Walking the Dead,
Operator) take on Inferno, the first part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy.
The 14th century tale sees Dante being guided by the Roman poet Virgil through
the nine circles of Hell as an allegory for recognizing and rejecting sin as a
way to guide one's soul towards God. The movie however, will follow Dante
descend into the nine circles of Hell in search of his beloved Beatrice.
Per Deadline, Warner was keen on picking up Worrell's script because of its
scale and franchise potential. This makes me believe, and I hope I'm wrong,
that the project could end up being one of those generic and ultimately
disposable action fantasy films where the male lead has to fight a horde of bland CGI
monsters (it's Hell after all) in order to save his love.
Personally I wouldn't mind
seeing something along the lines of Vincent Ward's What Dreams May Come
starring Robin Williams, but we will have to see how things progress.
Gianni Nunnari's Hollywood Gang, and Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road will
produce.
Besides Inferno, the Divine Comedy also includes Purgatorio, and
Paradiso.
