Mads Mikkelsen Up For A Role In Marvel's Doctor Strange

Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen is according to Variety on the verge or receiving an offer from Marvel Studios to play a villain in Scott Derrickson's Doctor Strange.

The actor was previously reported to be up for the role of Malekith the Accursed in Thor: The Dark World, but turned down the opportunity to play the main and titular character in NBC's Hannibal. The role ultimately went to former Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston.

Despite not having as much of a rogue gallery as other Marvel superheroes, there are a fewof villains that Mikkelsen could play, assuming that Marvel sticks with the comic mythos and isn't trying to pull a Thanos', i.e. introducing a villain (Mikkelsen) whose only goal is to tie-in an upcoming movie.

With Chiwetel Ejiofor confirmed to play Baron Mordo, the only other more prominent villains that I can't think of are either Dormammu, Mephisto, Dracula, Nightmare, or Blackheart.

Set to open on November 4, 2016, Doctor Strange follows the fall and raise of brilliant and arrogant neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who after a car accident loses the hand dexterity that made him famous. Now desperate for a miracle, Stephen travels to the Himalayas where he meets the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), a powerful mystic who opens Stephen's mind to the impossible, magic.

Mikkelsen was recently announced as having joined the Star Wars family with a role in Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
