It's that time of the
year! San Diego Comic-Con is back and that means loads of presentations and
panels, including the daddy of them all, Hall H.
Lionsgate opened up Hall
H's franchise fest with their last entry in The Hunger Games franchise.
Moderated by Conan O'Brien, the panel included producer Nina Jacobson, director
Francis Lawrence, and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson
and Willow Shields.
- On driving the
franchise home, Jacobson said that it was "a
combination of trying to really nail it, and to make sure that it is really
satisfying to a core," before adding that Mockingjay - Part 2 is "a very, very emotional conclusion."
- After a somewhat action-less
role in Mockingjay - Part 1, Ketniss is according to the director ready to jump
back into the action. "We get some real battle footage, and it’s some
really exciting stuff."
- To film the siege
on the Capitol, production moved from Atlanta to Europe, so the cast and crew could
be rejuvenated so to speak after being in Atlanta for so long, said the
director.
- Having difficulty
coming up with her favorite Katniss moment in the franchise, fellow co-star Josh
Hutcherson and crowd began yelling suggestions including the scene where
Katniss shot an arrow to the sky. Speaking of that moment, Lawrence revealed it
"wasn't as climatic to shoot in person". Finally, the actress
revealed that her favorite moment is yet to come in Mockingjay - Part 2.
- Speaking of Peeta's
role in the upcoming film, Hutcherson revealed that "It’s a long road to
recovery… In this movie they’re really trying to rehabilitate him and use him
as a good guy to help the cause."
- As for Gale,
Hemsworth said that he's "kind of been on the sidelines for a long time
and kind of watching things happen, and he’s now fully in the mix," before
adding that he will team-up with Beetee (Jeffrey Wright) for a few scenes.
- Willow Shields, who
plays Primrose, said that her character's evolution first started in Mockingjay
- Part 1, when she began taking care of Katniss, and will develop and conclude
in the upcoming film.
- On the
Katniss-Peeta-Gale love triangle, Hemsworth said he and Hutcherson have an
emotional scene together, and that "there might be a kiss between Josh and
I," which made the oblivious Lawrence start asking when the scene was
filmed.
- Jacobson also added
that Katniss finally takes control of her destiny in Part - 2, after having
many of her decision made for all throughout the franchise.
- "There’s no
way to say this without starting rumors, but that night we hugged and slept
like puppies," said Jennifer Lawrence about the emotional final scene
shot.
As with most if not
all panels, a portion of it was dedicated to do an audience Q&A, which for
the most part seemed to focus on the epilogue (spoilers alert).
- When asked about
epilogue, Lawrence said they shot it in the same field they filmed the first
scene of the first movie, and that she cried. Lawrence also revealed that only
her Hutcherson were present during the filming and that Hemsworth and Harrelson
weren't part of it.
- The filmmaker was
then asked about the differences between their epilogue and that of the book,
saying that he thinks "everybody here who loves the end of the last book
will love the end of the last movie."
- "I think one of
the biggest challenges is that during the book, Katniss doesn’t know a lot about
what’s going on around her," said Jacobson on adapting the portion of the
book between the climax and the epilogue. The producer also added they always
tried to stay in sync to Katniss' point of view all throughout the franchise.
- "The
consequence of war and violence" is what the director said they are
exploring Mockingjay - Part 2.
