During the Summer TCA
Press Tour, Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg offered a handful of
details regarding the upcoming Marvel show on Netflix, which will see Krysten
Ritter as a former superhero starting a fresh life as a private eye in Hell's
Kitchen.
First off, Rosenberg
teased the possibility of seeing Jones' going by one of her former alter egos
like Jewel or Knightress. "We're going to hit on that! We're going to hit
on it!"
Rosenberg also
revealed that "gender is not the first character aspect that defines"
the superhero, but that still she hopes the show will help usher in a new era
where female superheroes are more than just eye candy in unitards.
Jessica Jones
is "funny! She's dark! She’s the real deal. She's utterly compelling, both
the actress and the character," Rosenberg told ETOnline. "The first
time I saw [Ritter] do drama was Breaking Bad. And she was just a guest
star. We pushed her to some really dark, emotional places, and she just keeps
going there. She's
got incredible range!"
As for a potential crossover with Daredevil,
Rosenberg confirmed that Rosario Dawson will be stopping by the new show, and
added that other "smaller characters that populated that world will be
popping by."
The showrunner also clarified Marvel's
Head of Television Jeph Loeb description of the show as being a "psychological
thriller" by adding that there will be plenty of action to go around.
"It's about the
character, it's about her emotional arc," she explained. "And she's
not a ninja. She never studies martial arts. She's a brawler. You piss her off
and boom! You're down! We're not seeing a whole lot of--" (She then mimicked
a praying mantis pose and shouted) "--Hiyah!" before ending with
"She's not out to save the city," she laughed. "She's out to make rent."
Jessica Jones will
premiere sometime in 2015.
