It seems that creative differences' kill list has scratch another director
of its list. This time Sofia Coppola was the one that took the hit by departing
from Universal Pictures, and Working Title's live-action adaptation of Hans
Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid.
According to Deadline Coppola cited creative differences for her exit, and according to Variety the filmmaker and the studio were unable to see eye-to-eye
over the casting of Ariel, with Coppola looking to newcomer Maya Thurman Hawke,
the daughter of Uma Thurman, and Ethan Hawke, and the studio looking the other
way.
Despite the setback, Universal is probably keen on quickly moving ahead with the project,
especially since Disney has cornered the market on live-action adaptations,
remakes, and reinterpretations of classic children's stories, such as
Maleficent, Cinderella, and upcoming The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast.
Coraline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands) penned the most recent draft of the
script, after Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks), and Abi Morgan (Shame).
