After a few
false starts, it seems that Sony is finally ready to move forward with the
adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series of novels.
According to
Deadline, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo co-writer, and A Royal Affair
director Nikolaj Arcel is the studio's choice to direct and rewrite the first
film in the planned franchise based on King's novels.
The Dark Tower series
tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is
traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching
for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. Located
in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower
is the nexus point of the time-space continuum. It is the heart of all
worlds, but it is also under threat. Someone, or something, is using the evil
technology of the Great Old Ones to destroy it.
Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital are financing
the project, with MRC also developing a companion TV series. Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment, Akiva Goldsman's
Weed Road, and Ron Howard and Erica Huggins Imagine production companies are
producing.
Stars like Javier
Bardem, and Russell Crowe, have danced around the cinematic role, while Breaking Bad star Aaron
Paul has talked with Ron Howard about the TV series.
