With a box-office gross of over $750 million worldwide,
it's no big wonder Disney is looking to expand 2014's Maleficent into a
franchise with Angelina Jolie reprising her malevolent though sympathetic role.
According to Deadline, Maleficent screenwriter Linda
Woolverton has been tapped by Disney to pen the script for the sequel, which
would see Jolie reprising her role from the 2014 re-imagining of the studio's
1959 animated classic, Sleeping Beauty. However, Woolverton is at this time the
only confirmed talent associated to the project, with Jolie apparently being "kept
in the loop".
Though she has made sequels before (Tomb Raider),
Jolie passed down on the Salt, and Wanted follow-ups, so it will be interesting
to see what kind of a deal the studio will have to offer to make her return.
Disney has a myriad of other animation-to-live-action
adaptations and re-imaginings on the way, such as Dumbo, Pinoccio, Beauty and
the Beast, Tinkerbell, and Mullan to name a few.
