Fox has surprised fans by announcing that an X-Men spinoff film is in the
works with The Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone set to co-write the
script and helm the project based on Marvel's The New Mutants.
The New Mutants introduced a new group of students to Professor Charles
Xavier school, which included Wolfsbane, Warlock, Magma, Cannonball, Cypher,
Magik, Boom Boom, and many others, some of which have already had a preeminent debut
in X-Men: Days of Future Past like Blink (Fan Bingbing), Sunspot (Adan Canto), and
Warpath (Booboo Stewart).
At this time it's unclear how connected to the main storyline the spinoff
will be, i.e. sharing characters other than Professor Xavier presumably, or if it
will be set in the same timeline.
Knate Gwaltney will be co-writing the script with Boone, and Simon Kinberg
will produce alongside Lauren Shuler Donner.
"We’re
so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited
to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young
characters," said Kinberg of the spinoff.
But before you start jumping up and
down of joy with the expansion of the X-Universe you should know that Boone is
currently attached to direct at least three different project. The director's
next film is the adaptation of Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles, with the Stephen
King novels The Stand, and Lisey's Story next. So unless something drastic
changes on those fronts we should expect The New Mutants to hit theaters
no sooner than 2017/2018.
