Though hugely popular and entertaining, the one thing
superhero movies and TV shows are not is diverse. Sure, there were a few black
superheroes throughout the years, with Blade being the most successful example
with three films, but they have been mostly relegated to secondary roles
without much to do and more often than not, they don't even get to live to see
the end credits. Nevertheless, the wind seems to be slowly changing, with Will
Smith taking on the Deadshot role in DC's Suicide Squad, and Chadwick Boseman
leading Marvel's Black Panther films.
While attending the MCM London Comic Con, The Walking
Dead, Everybody Hates Chris star, and the voice of DC hero Jason
Rusch/Firestorm in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold cartoon, Tyler James
Williams let it slip that Jaden Smith has been cast as Static Shock in the
upcoming TV adaptation of the DC Comics Milestone Comics imprint.
"I don't know... What you're taking about,"
Williams said to Flicks And The City when asked about the possibility of
playing Static Shock. "But yeah no, it's great to see Static Shock is
happening with Jaden."
At this time Warner Bros. has yet to confirm the news
but Jaden Smith was previously rumored to be up for the role, which is/was
being developed as a live-action digital series with Django unchained producer
Reginald Hudlin, who curiously wrote Black Panther run for Marvel.
Williams went on to talk about the possibility of
playing Miles Morales, and revealed that he has read for Marvel.
"I kind of followed the Miles Morales character
quite a bit - my brother really did, so he suggested if it goes that way it
could work," Williams said. "And I'm open to the idea, I am.
I'm not like starting campaigns for it because I trust Marvel. I've read for
them before. So I trust what their decisions will be. But yeah, I'd love to do
it. I would absolutely love to do it. I think there are a few names in the hat
that absolutely do make sense. Kind of who is the best for it. I'd be stoked to
do it."
The last update on the Spider-front placed Ender's
Game star Asa Butterfield at the top of the list.
