Wonder Woman Loses Director Michelle MacLaren

It looks like Michelle MacLaren won't be the first female director to dive into the world of big budget superhero tentoples after all. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director is out and the studio is giving creative differences as the reason.

Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together.

Claiming creative differences is the same as claiming scheduling conflicts. Those are just the generic terms that studios use when they announce that someone has just been fired so I wouldn't read too much into it, however the question of when a female director is able to sit at the "boys table" remains.

That I can remember only two female directors have ever helmed a big screen adaptation of a comic book, which means MacLaren would have been the third and perhaps the most important given the project status. In 1995, Rachel Talalay directed the loose adaptation of Tank Girl, and in 2008, Lexi Alexander helmed Punisher: War Zone.

MacLaren is an accomplished TV director and showrunner, whose credits include Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead.
