It looks like
Universal is finally ready to move forward with another Creature from the Black
Lagoon film now that they have setup a shared universe featuring their main classic
movie monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and so on.
A remake or reinterpretation
of director Jack Arnold's 1954 classic horror film has been in the pipeline for
years. In 1982, John Landis tried to get Arnold back but to no avail. John
Carpenter also tried his luck but nothing happened, and neither did the one
Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) tried to do with Breck Eisner (The Crazies).
According to The
Tracking Board, Universal has offered Scarlett Johansson the lead role in the
film. The actress' dramatic chops and action know-how should be a good fit for
the film, if the same follows the same route as the first film in the CMMU (Classic
Movie Monsters Universe), Dracula Untold.
For now it's all pure
speculation, which might end up in nothing since Johansson has not only Captain
America: Civil War and the rest of Marvel's Cinematic Universe to deal with but
also the Ghost in the Shell film, which depending on the box-office might be
the actress solo franchise.
Another reason why Johansson
might decline the offer is her quota. Dracula Untold cost $70 to produce, so
unless this film has a bigger budget, which is doubtful, it will be difficult
to allocate the funds to get the actress. Moreover, let's not forget that she
probably won't be playing the central character, i.e. the creature, so it's highly
unlikely that she would decide to lower her quota to play a character in a
summer tentpole who might not be around for a sequel.
Alex Kurtzman, who is
in charge of Universal's monster universe, is also producing and will be
directing the Mummy reboot.
