The title and first piece of casting news for director Gareth Edwards' Star
Wars standalone film have officially been announced. Titled Rogue One, Edwards'
Star Wars standalone film will star the Academy Award nominee Felicity
Jones in an undisclosed role, and will start principal photography this summer
in London for a December 16, 2016 release date.
The idea for the story
of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning
visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light &
Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight
Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War
of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The
Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force
Awakens) will co-produce.
The news was
announced this morning by Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger during a shareholder
meeting, who also confirmed that Rian Johnson (Looper) will write and direct
Star Wars: Episode VIII, which will open on May 26, 2017, and will
continue the saga set in motion by J.J. Abrams with Star Wars: The Force
Awakens.
