Steven Moffat has confirmed today that the much anticipated Christmas
special of Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will be
set in Victorian England.
"The special is its own thing,"
stressed Moffat, who doesn't want fans thinking that the show will be
redesigned. Therefore, no Sherlock won't be permanently replacing 21st century London
taxis for 19th century carriages. "We wouldn’t
have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have
this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do
it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and
me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be
separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its
own little bubble."
The 90-minute special
is for the most part done, and Moffat is very pleased with how it turned out.
Though expected to
hit British TV around December, no air date has been officially given yet.
