Despite its enormous
box office success, it seems that the public clashes between Sam Taylor-Johnson
and author E.L. James have taken their toll on the director, who has decided
not to return to helm the sequels.
It's unclear what specifically
made Johnson bail out, but the director and the author, who literally has the
last word over the adaptations head butted more than a few times during the
production of Fifty Shades of Grey. Furthermore, the author
recently demanded to write the script for the sequel, Fifty Shades Darker,
which must have been the last straw for Johnson, who I presume must have wanted
to make some changes after seeing the first film get almost universally panned
by both critics, and some movie goers alike.
Directing Fifty Shades of Grey has been an intense and
incredible journey for which I am hugely grateful. I have Universal to thank
for that. I forged close and lasting relationships with the cast, producers and
crew and most especially, with Dakota and Jamie. While I will not be returning
to direct the sequels, I wish nothing but success to whosoever takes on the
exciting challenges of films two and three.
The question now is who will the studio, and ultimately
James pick to helm the second film in the trilogy. Will it be someone with a
similar vision to James? Someone that desperately needs a job and is willingly
to let his/her vision at the door, or some newcomer that needs to make a name?
