Twenty years after the release
of his cult comedy Mallrats, director Kevin Smith has confirmed that he is
currently working on the sequel.
"It's
half a script right now, and we're pulling our loot together. We've got up
until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be
shooting."
The director has a significant
amount of projects in the pipeline, so it's unclear how true to the date he can
stick to. The director will start filming Clerks III this May, and he also has
a hockey film titled Hit Somebody scheduled to begin production in September.
Next year the director hopes to start principal photography of the horror film
Moose Jaws in February, which will be followed by Anti-Claus.
"Lately I've been
doing this thing where I'm like, 'Do you want to do what's good for your
career, or do you just want to have fun?'" Smith said. "Nobody's
clamoring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love
to make one. It's been like 20 years."
Smith adds that he "had a cool idea and a bunch of investors that were like, 'Do it,'
so here we are."
