While some studios go to already established stars to lead their franchises
Disney and Lucasfilm don't seem to be afraid of tapping into niche actors and
actresses that to lead one of their flagship tentpoles. So far, having cast Adam
Driver, Lupita Nyong'o, John Boyega, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Daisy
Ridley, J.J. Abrams Star Wars: The Force Awkens is the best example of that,
however, it seems that director Gareth Edwards' might be on the way of starting
his own eclectic ensemble.
According to Deadline Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn is circling a lead
role alongside Felicity Jones in Edwards' Star Wars standalone film, Rogue One.
Better known for his roles in Animal Kingdom, Killing Them Softly, The Dark
Knight Rises, Starred Up, and his new drama series Bloodline on Netflix, Mendelsohn
certainly has what it takes to star and lead a Star Wars film.
Star Wars: Rogue One is part of series of standalone films that will open
in between the episodic franchise. Rogue One will premiere in the year after
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, on December 16, 2016.
