The Disney Worldwide
Publishing and Lucasfilm Press are planning to release in this fall at least
twenty new books that will close the 32-year gap between 1983's Star Wars:
Return of the Jedi, and this December's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The series of books,
which will range from novels to adults, to young-adult, to storybooks, to
stickerbooks is titled Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and each
individual title will be filled with Easter Eggs teasing what will transpire in
J.J. Abrams' Force Awakens.
The new series, which
also shares the same universe with Rebels as well as future series, games, etc…
spans not only multiple authors but also publishers like DK, Marvel Comics, and
Del Rey.
"The Force Awakens is an extraordinarily, heavily
guarded storyline. To track it, a lot of top-secret meetings were happening up
in San Francisco as we worked through this program," said Andrew Sugerman,
executive vice president of Disney Publishing Worldwide.
"The
partnership with the story group and the editorial team always had to be true
to the sanctity of the film while making sure that we find these moments to
introduce hints, clues, and puzzle pieces," Sugerman says. "Without
revealing what those pieces are, it will just allow readers to speculate about
the new film: What could a location mean, or what could a character mean?"
Some
titles have already been confirmed. Del Rey will putting out Star Wars:
Aftermath, which sounds like it could be the first one out the gates,
explaining what happened after Return of the Jedi. Marvel has one prequel
titled Star Wars: Journey to the Force Awakens, and story told from C-3PO's
perspective. Meanwhile, Studio Fun International will be publishing a Star
Wars: Ships of the Galaxy, which sounds like one of those David West Reynolds
astonishing cross-section books.
There
will
be a series of novels aimed to young adults that won't belong to the Journey to
Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The idea is to introduce new fans to "the
heroes and villains" from the original trilogy.
"Cecil Castellucci (author
of Tin Star) will write Moving Target, an adventure
following Princess Leia; Jason Fry, who earlier wrote Darth Maul:
Shadow Conspiracy, will be the author of The Weapon of a Jedi,
about Luke Skywalker; Claudia Gray, author of the Evernightseries
of fantasy books, will write a book titled Lost Stars; and Greg
Rucka, a comic book scribe and writer of the Atticus Kodiak novels,
will pen Smuggler’s Run, a Han Solo tale."
