Yet another director thinks movies based on comic books
are the root of all evil. After penning the script for such films like Real
Steel, and The Bourne Legacy, which by the way starred more than a few actors
currently playing superheroes or villains, Dan Gilroy made his directorial
debut with Nightcrawler. The film featured and astonishing performance by Jake
Gyllenhaal, who played Lou Bloom, an L.A. crime reporter who more often than
not crosses the line between objective journalist and participant in the story
he is reporting.
While at the Independent Spirit Awards, where he won
Best First Feature, and Best Screenplay, Gilroy felt the need to self commiserate
on the fact that he his directorial debut, which besides winning two awards at
the ISA, was also nominated for an Oscar, is fighting the "tsunami of
superhero movies" currently being made in Hollywood.
"Independent film, the foundation and everybody
here today, I think are holdouts against a tsunami of superhero movies that
have swept over this industry. We have survived and we have thrived and I think
that's true spirit."
What do you think?
