Well that was fast!
Last week director Frank Darabont departed from Universal's sequel to Snow White
and the Huntsman citing creative differences over the project, and today the
studio already has someone ready to replace him. According to The Hollywood
Reporter director, Cedric Nicolas-Troyan has signed on to helm the project, and
if the name doesn't ring a bell, well there is a good reason for that. Nicolas-Troyan was the second unit director on
the first film, and on Maleficent, and is also attached to helm the Highlander
reboot.
The quickness of the
whole thing raises a couple of red flags. Without questioning the director's
abilities, it is strange that you would hire a first time director to helm a
second installment in this big of a franchise, even if he was second unit on
the first film. The second red flag is that if Darabont, who has a name and
some influence left because of creative differences then what kind of creative
input will a first time director have?
The Huntsman will see
the return of Charlize Theron, and Chris Hemsworth, and will add Emily Blunt as
Theron's sister.
The Huntsman is
scheduled to be released on April 22, 2016.
